how to get a salon blowout at home

Let me guess. You’ve left the salon with perfectly smooth hair, volume in all the right places, and a bouncy-bend. You took home all the right products, but you can’t figure out why your hair falls flat, doesn’t keep a style, or still feels frizzy.

We’re here to answer one of our most-asked question- “How do I get a salon blowout at home?”

Products and tools for an at-home blow out

We wouldn’t attempt a beautiful blowout without professional products and the right hot tools, and you shouldn’t either! The key is finding the best products for your specific hair type (psst.. It’s probably not the same regime as your friend, your mom, or your sister). If your stylist recommended products for you, you’ll want to have them ready for your blow out. Next up, hot tools! Part two of necessities for your at-home blowout. You’ll need a professional quality blow dryer with a concentrator attachment(we love the Unite one!)and hot air brush. You can make your life a little bit simpler by adding a detangling brush to your regime (we love the Framar detangle brush).

Step 1: Applying blowout products and rough drying

Your products are ready to go and you’ve just stepped out of the shower. So what’s next?

Towel dry your hair and remove as much of the moisture as possible. Then, using your recommended product regime, apply each product as instructed and distribute evenly with a detangle brush.

Grab your blow dryer (don’t forget to attach the concentrator), set the setting on high heat and high pressure, and begin to dry your hair. For volume at your root, pick up your hair in sections and dry the hair that’s closest to your scalp first. You can also tip your head upside down and begin blow drying that way. Continue to dry your hair from roots to ends until it’s about 90% dry.

Step 2: Sectioning your hair for a blowout

Using claw clips (we love these), divide your hair into three sections, twisting into a knot and securing with a clip. Your first section should be a horizontal inch on either side and at the end of your part. The second will be two inches below your previous section; continuing your horizontal lines. No need to knot and secure your final section (the remaining hair), as you’ll be styling this hair first!

Step 3: How to use a hot air brush for a blowout

If you haven’t used a hot air brush before, you’re in for a treat. Really, this tool is going to be your new best friend. It’s a round brush (our go-to for everyone) and a blow dryer in one. In other words, volume, bend, body, and movement in your hair WHILE you blow dry. Pretty incredible, right?! P.S. - we love this one.

Turn it on and give it a few seconds to warm up. Depending on the hot air brush, this can take a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Use your own discretion or read the hot air brush manual beforehand, keeping in mind that each brush might be slightly different

Starting with the bottom section of your hair, take two to three inches of hair at a time and wrap it around the brush (but not completely around it) so it catches on the bristles. Then slowly glide the brush downwards; bending the brush as you approach the bottom.

Repeat this step until you’ve covered the entire bottom section of the hair. Then remove your middle sectioning clip, and continue. Once you’ve reached the top section, try holding your hot air brush at a 90 degree angle while you brush through to create volume at your root.

Step 4: Finishing your at-home blowout

You did it! You (almost) completed your professional blowout! Yay, you!

The last, and final step, is applying your finishing products. Your professional regime includes at least one finishing product, and your stylist has provided her expert instruction on how to use it.

Always apply your finishing products lightly; adding more if necessary until you’ve achieved the perfect amount of hold, texture, or shine.
