5 Hair Mistakes You’re Probably Making

With so many rules and trends, how do you know you’re opting for the best routine for your hair? Here’s our advice on the top 5 things you should skip and their best replacements.

You’re not using professional products

Listen, we get it. When you’re running low on shampoo and conditioner, it’s a lot easier adding them to your Target pick-up rather than making an extra trip to the salon. Not to mention the prices are usually less. But hear us out on this, okay?

While it seems like you’re getting a better bang for your buck with drugstore products, have you noticed how quickly your bottles run low? Or how much shampoo you’re using when you wash your hair? Professional brands usually only require you to use a dime to nickel size amount of shampoo. That’s because our brands are SO heavily concentrated with quality ingredients! Sure, the original price tag is more than a drugstore product, but you can expect a shampoo and conditioner to last you around 3 months!

And you know what else comes around every 3 months? Your regular hair trim appointment (wink wink)! Stocking up on your favorite shampoo and conditioner and eliminating that empty-bottle-panic couldn’t be easier.

You’re rinsing with hot water

Try rinsing your hair with cool water and we promise you’ll never go back. Here’s why:

Each of your hair strands is composed of, what looks like, shingles. When you use hot water, the shingles open up- creating a perfect environment for your shampoo to cleanse (another reason why you want a shampoo with quality ingredients). Your conditioner is then designed to enter the shingles and repair, add moisture, etc. to the inner parts of your hair strands. Then, it seals the shingles- locking in the ‘good stuff’ and shielding the hair strand from environmental damage.

But what happens when you rinse the conditioner with that steaming hot water that feels so good? You guessed it. The shingles open up and you lose most of the benefits of the conditioner.

Next time you wash your hair, just give it a try. You’ll probably notice your hair feeling much softer, shinier and generally healthier!

You’re wrapping a cotton towel around your wet head

It’s so much easier, and convenient, to throw your dripping hair into a towel on the top of your head. But the coarse, dry texture of a towel is damaging your hair strands.

Try using a microfiber towel next time. It absorbs a significant amount more water than cotton- making it an even faster option to dry your hair compared to your cotton towel!

You’re not using a prep product

If you only choose one product after you get out of the shower, this is the one. Prep products are the first product you apply after towel drying your hair. And if you skip this one, you’re missing out on a ton of benefits. Prep products can be as simple as a leave-in conditioner that detangles and protects against damage, or they can be multi-functional- repairing your hair, protecting from heat styling and environmental damage, softening, speeding up your blow dry, and so much more. Plus, since you’re using it every time you wash, your hair is receiving a huge boost of love every week!

We recommend Oi All In One Milk (also described as “literal magic”).

You’re not getting professional in-salon treatments

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner is hugely beneficial for everyday use. But what about the inner parts of your hair structure that shampoo and conditioner alone can’t reach? That’s where in-salon treatments come in.

With a variety (and even customizable) options, professional treatments work from the inner parts of your hair- providing essential nutrients to repair and prevent damage, smooth and deeply hydrate. Plus, they’re an easy add-on to your next hair service!
